Innovation in the World of AI: Are We Building Better, or Just Adding Layers to Broken Systems?
The rapid advancements in AI promise to transform how we approach daily tasks. But are we truly innovating, or simply amplifying existing problems?
The rapid advancements in AI have undeniably transformed how we approach daily tasks. From automating monotonous duties like form-filling and note-taking to generating smart meeting summaries, AI promises to free up human time for higher-value activities – areas where our unique skills remain irreplaceable.
But what truly defines innovation? Is it merely enhancing existing processes, or does it demand a fundamental rethinking of how we operate? Sometimes, innovation is indeed a continuous improvement of what we already do. Other times, it's a revolutionary breakthrough, akin to the internet's arrival or the current AI paradigm shift.
However, with all these AI-driven enhancements, a crucial question arises: Are we truly innovating for the better, or are we sometimes exacerbating problems by simply layering AI on top of already flawed systems?
The Job Search Paradox
Let's consider the world of job searching as a prime example. For as long as I can remember, the process has been consistent: companies announce open positions, and individuals apply. While the medium has evolved from newspaper classifieds to digital platforms, the core mechanism remains largely unchanged.
No one finds job searching easy, neither then nor now. In fact, I believe AI has, in some ways, made it even more challenging. The market is saturated with tools designed to "optimize" resumes to match job descriptions, ensuring applicants get past initial screening algorithms. Similarly, recruiters leverage AI to tweak job descriptions to attract "the right talent." Platforms like LinkedIn and Indeed even offer "quick application" features, making it incredibly fast to apply – so fast that applicants often forget what they've even applied for.
The Result?
A dramatic increase in applications, overwhelming recruiters. Their solution? Deploying AI to screen candidates, finding the "best fit" based on those very same optimized resumes. What began as a human seeking a human for a job has, in many instances, devolved into a bot screening another bot.
True Innovation Requires Rethinking
Is this true innovation? Or is it simply throwing technology at an already broken process, hoping for a better outcome? Sometimes, innovation isn't just about digitizing a paper process while keeping everything else the same. It requires taking a step back, critically examining the entire process, and envisioning entirely new ways of working with the powerful tools we have available today in this new AI-driven world.
